There are no miracle cures for stuttering but speech language pathologists can help people of all ages move towards fluency. Assessment identifies fluency strengths and weaknesses that affect communication performance, how disrupted fluency impacts the individual's participation in daily activities and factors that help or hinder fluency during communication. Intervention focuses on the overall goal of reducing the negative impact of stuttering on the client's life. Specifically, functional communication skills in a variety of real life (and meaningful to the client) situations and their ability to achieve educational, vocational and social goals are targeted. Goals focus on the facilitation of improved communicative effectiveness and perception of life quality as well as increased client confidence.
